What I Learned During This Project

The knowledge I gained during this project gave me a new perspective on how the little things in our daily life effect our environment.

Before I did this project I didn’t know how serious global warming is and the great impact it will have on the environment in the future. The important thing I learned is that if we all work together as people and governments we can reduce our effect on global warming and hopeful eliminate it so all kind of species around the world don’t suffer because of what we humans did.

I did my research and started my new lifestyle to reduce my impact on global warming and I hope you start soon.

Me

Hi everyone, my name is Mubarak Alnahyan. I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE and study Business Administration at the Higher Collage of Technology of Abu Dhabi. I was born on September 29th 1987. I have lived all my life in Abu Dhabi except for one year when I finished high school and studied in the USA. In the USA I studied in a University in Los Angeles, California. I enjoy going to collage and think that the classes I’m taking are very interesting. My hobbies include football, basketball and swimming. On the weekend my friends and I either go to the desert or go to the beach it depends on what time of the year it is. I enjoy going to the cinema and watch the new movies that are playing, I also enjoy going to restaurants with my friends. Most of the time that I’m home I watch TV, I’m addicted to TV shows.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is something we all have to take seriously or our children and grandchildren will blame us for not doing what is right.

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth in the last century, which continues to increase and won’t stop increasing until the people make an effort to stop it. Global warming happens due to the greenhouse gases, which are let in the atmosphere by humans. It happens like this, first the humans pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, then these gases act like a mirror to the sunrays, which are reflected from the earth so they bounce back to earth. This makes the average temperature of the earth increase, which make glaciers melt and the water goes to the sea, which makes the sea level rise. The rise in sea level and the increase in temperature will both have a big impact on everything living on this earth.

To stop this complex problem we should all do something to stop this from happening. If we do our children and grandchildren could live in a safe unpolluted world.

Causes of Global Warming

The first step in stopping global warming is knowing its causes. Most if not all scientists agree on what causes global warming

Carbon dioxide is the principal green house gas. Power plants which generate electricity also produces carbon dioxide, in 2002 about 40% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions was from the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity. About 20% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions come from cars, which run on gasoline, the most cars that contribute to global warming are cars with poor gas mileage. Truck used mostly for commercial purposes also produce carbon dioxide. Airplanes that in the near future will be used more and more also produce carbon dioxide. Methane is the second after carbon dioxide in the green house gases. Methane is produced from sources like rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel production. Nitrous oxide is another green house gas; man-made sources of nitrous oxide include nylon and nitric acid production and the use of fertilizers in agriculture. Last but not least is deforestation; by cutting down all these trees we are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Now we now most if not all the causes of global warming, and by knowing the causes, this means that we are capable of stopping global warming.

Deforestation

Deforestation caused by humans contributes to one third of all carbon dioxide and 25 to 30 percent of all the green house gases released into the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases for a couple of reasons but one of the main factors, which increases carbon levels, is the decay of woody material. The only way in decreasing the level of carbon dioxide is through plant life. Plants and trees absorb the carbon dioxide from decaying plants and trees. With a decrease in trees and plants, due to deforestation, it is much harder to decrease the levels of carbon dioxide. This means that the carbon levels will increase due to the decrease of plant life to keep the carbon dioxide levels normal. Also decaying plants produce methane, which is a green house gas that is more harmful to the environment that carbon dioxide. These green house gases that are let out in the atmosphere leads to an increase in temperature and climate change, which is global warming.

Deforestation has a great impact on the environment and contributes to global warming. With these facts we should all acknowledge how this will harm the environment and together we have to make a change by decreasing deforestation.

Effects of Global Warming

We know the causes of global warming so now I’m going to write about the effect global warming has on us humans and the effect it has on earth.

Global warming has great effects on the weather. With the increase of temperature it is most likely that hurricanes will also increase, this is because there is a high correlation between temperature and hurricanes. The warmer climate will also increase evaporation. Global warming will also causes the temperature around the world to increase. With the increase of the global average temperature the sea level around the world will rise, this will have a big impact on cities which are on the coasts. The ecosystem is also effected by global warming, some species, especially birds, are forced out of their habitats due to the rising temperatures, this could causes their extinction. Glacier retreat is also increasing due to global warming.

I conclude that global warming has a great effect on the earth and on everything that lives on it, so together we have to make a change to save our planet.

Glacier Retreat

Glacier retreat is one of the effects that are caused by global warming. There is lots of evidence around the world that global warming has a direct impact on glaciers.

Since 1980 glacier retreat has increased rapidly, so now many of the glaciers around the world are threatened because they might not exist in the future. The total surface area of glaciers worldwide has decreased by 50% since the end of the 1800’s. The loss of glaciers directly causes landslides, flash floods, glacial lake overflow as well as annual variation in water flows in rivers.

Other than the beautiful views that we are not going to be able to enjoy, the impact it will have on the environment is great so we have to fight global warming.

Articles On UAE And Global Warming

UAE to cut carbon dioxide emissions

Recently I read an article on the internet about how the UAE is going to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The UAE has announced the launch of a major national carbon dioxide emission reduction program that is going to make a carbon dioxide capture and storage network. This capture and storage network will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40% and increase oil production by up to 10%. This network works by separating carbon dioxide from industrial and energy related sources and is transported to oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery. This program is part of the Masdar Initiative, which is a UAE based international advanced energy venture that focuses on sustainable energy and other clean technologies.

It’s great to hear that the UAE is taking part in the fight against global warming, and I hope in the future they continue to take part in it.

UAE to host Kyoto workshop

Recently I read an article on the internet that the UAE is going to host the Kyoto workshop.

The UAE is going to host a three-day Kyoto workshop in Abu Dhabi. The meeting will be about “Reporting Methodologies on Article 3.14 of the Kyoto Protocol”. This article requires industrialized countries and countries with economies in transition to implement their emission targets in a way to minimize the negative social, environmental and economic impact on developing countries including oil producing nations. The UAE representatives from relevant organizations are going to attend and participate in this event. The Kyoto Protocol received the backing of more than 55 countries, including the UAE.

From all the countries in the world they held this event in the UAE, I suppose it’s due to how environmental the UAE is, I hope they continue to participate in these events.

What I Will Do To Reduce Global Warming

Each and every one of us can make a difference in global warming. We have to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because it is the major contributor to global warming. I have been researching on how I can make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is let out in the atmosphere, so I’m going to tell you how I will achieve my goal.

First of all I will use less electricity by fitting my house with fluorescent lights and I will not overheat or overcool rooms in my house. Then I will walk, use a bike or uses mass transit whenever possible. I’m also willing to buy a new car soon, which I’ll make sure has good gas mileage.

If only I do these things to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, it won’t work, but if will all take part in this great cause together we can make a difference.
